Women Transformed 2014 Conference
Columbia, SC, —The financial prospects for African American women looks bleak compared to their white, non Hispanic counterparts, and a faith-based conference is on a mission to empower them with tools and resources to bridge the gap. On July 26, Women Transformed 2014 will be held from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Brookland Banquet & Conference Center in West Columbia and will focus on personal and financial empowerment. Registration is $25 for 18 and up, $15 for youth 17 and under, and includes a light lunch.
Conference organizer, Carol Douglas Lyles, says “It’s no secret that African Americans typically earn less than whites when performing the same job, but a report by the Center for American Progress, an independent nonpartisan educational institute, sounds the alarm for a departure from a ‘business as usual’ mindset that having ‘enough to get by’ is okay because the ‘enough to get by’ that we have today will not be ‘enough’ to live comfortably tomorrow.” Lyles says, “We have to change the way we think and look at our circumstances and what actions we need to take to improve them. The stakes are high because many women will find themselves living single, as a single parent, widowed, divorced or married and the principal bread winner. According to the Center for American Progress, based on the most current data available, “African American women only made 64 cents to the dollar compared to white, non-Hispanic men in 2010, while married or cohabiting African American women have a medium wealth of $31,500 and single African American women have a median wealth of only $100. And it was even worse for African American women with children whose median wealth is zero.”
Lyles says, “The purpose of the conference is to provide a venue for minds to be transformed through information, education, and spiritual inspiration. We have an awesome line up of presenters and everyone should leave not only feeling empowered and motivated, but connected to a larger group of women and resources to help them move forward. ” Conference presenters include: Life Coach, Jeannette Scott; Author, Evangelist and Healthy Life Coach, Vernel Edwards; Award Winning Playwright and Producer, Tangie Beaty; Financial Professional, Rosalyn Glynn; and Keynote speaker, Candace Shiver, Special Advisor to the National Director of Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), U.S. Department of Commerce, appointed by President Barack Obama.
Women Transformed 2014 is partnering with Loretta Coleman Ministries to assist needy families with back to school supplies. Participants who bring pencils, note book paper or other school supplies will be registered for a chance to win the grand door prize awarded at the end of the conference.
