The Sheriff stated that violent crime and property crime are both down – since 2008 crime has reduced overall by 12% in Richland County . The Sheriff stated that violent crime has reduced by 14% and property crime by 10%. Sheriff Leon Lott attributes this reduction to community involvement and the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Department. The Sheriff added that in 2013 there were 5,660 victims; 5,660 people’s lives were changed in Richland County . Sheriff Leon Lott stated that although this number is down, from previous years, he is not satisfied and will continue to work toward having zero victims. The Sheriff stated that he will continue to work on preventing crime before it happens.

Sheriff Leon Lott knows that people often focus on crime numbers and it is important to know what crimes are being committed, where they are being committed and by whom. However, the Sheriff believes that the true gauge of the quality of life in our communities is how people feel about their neighborhoods and citizen’s trust and perception of law enforcement. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that he will continue to build partnerships that improve our schools and business and residential communities. The Sheriff stated he will continue to pursue effective and efficient means to make our homes, schools and businesses the safest anywhere.
