Visit highlighted ‘Opportunity Zones’; Church’s 23-acre neighborhood revitalization
Columbia, SC.– The Meeting Place Church was thrilled to welcome Vice President Mike Pence, Second Lady Karen Pence and Senator Tim Scott to their ministry complex in Northeast Columbia. The visit highlighted the church’s ongoing mission to re-invest in the people and places in greatest need, providing ministry services and economic opportunity throughout their community and abroad.
“Having Vice President Pence and Senator Scott take the time to visit the Church is a testament to their convictions and belief in what we’re trying to accomplish,” said The Meeting Place Church’s Bishop Eric Freeman. “It was a privilege and truly humbling experience to be able to shine a light on the wonderful work our congregation and community continue to do every day.”
Vice President Pence joined Freeman for a tour of the church and its surrounding 23-acre complex. Situated in an Opportunity Zone – a designation for certain distressed areas that provides developers with federal tax incentives for re-development, championed by Senator Scott – the church recently welcomed a new tenant: the Spotlight Cinemas Capital 8 movie theater.
“When we work together – from the community level, to the pulpit, to the highest levels of government – we can make the changes we all want to see in our communities,” said Freeman. “It’s not about us – it’s about giving our neighbors the opportunities everyone deserves. Having that work and the greater mission of The Meeting Place Church in the spotlight is an unbelievable blessing.”
