CHAPIN – Residents in Lexington-Richland School District Five now have a new location to recycle cooking oil thanks to a partnership between the Center for Advanced Technical Studies and Green Energy Biofuel.

The clean energy business from Winnsboro, SC donated a collection container to The Center and will make regular trips to collect the waste where it will then be converted to clean, renewable fuel.

“Environmental stewardship is a core value of The Center, and especially the clean energy program as well as the agriculture science program here. We try to instill that value in the students that we teach every day,” said Patrick Smallwood, clean energy technology instructor at The Center. “For us now to be a public drop off site, it is a tremendous opportunity and a lesson for our students that we cannot just simply explain in the classroom.”

Green Energy Biofuel’s “Bio 4 Edu” program creates educational opportunities for students to learn about the biofuel industry with grants. Thousands of students have been trained in South Carolina about the biofuel industry and have donated close to $30,000 to the state.

For each gallon of cooking oil collected, The Center will receive $0.25 to go towards its clean energy and agriculture programs.

“We take educating students on the importance of helping the earth become a cleaner, friendlier place very seriously,” said Joe Renwick, founder of Green Energy Biofuel. “This is an opportunity for students to learn how our process works and open their minds about their future.”

Residents can drop off their oil anytime at the collection station located outside of the clean energy technology building at The Center for Advanced Technical. The address is 916 Mt. Vernon Church Rd., Chapin, SC 29036.
