Have You Suffered?
By Dr. Jed N. Snyder
As we approach Christmas we are encouraged to ask ourselves “how much like the Master are we really?” Jesus made some profound and disturbing statements concerning our relationship to the non-believing world around us.
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” John 15:18-20
What we learn is that the more like Jesus Christ we become, the more likely those who surround us will become uncomfortable with us. Our light, the reflected light of Jesus will shine on the sin of those who surround us. If these folk are unwilling to repent from their sin and seek God fully, they will not appreciate the light that reveals their sin. There are only about three things we can do when light shines. We can receive it and adjust ourselves accordingly; we can turn away and attempt to ignore the dirt that the light reveals or we can try to turn out the light. The people surrounding Jesus Christ when he lived here did not want to change but they could not ignore what Jesus said and did. So their remaining alternative was to try to turn out the light. They seemed to have succeeded when they crucified him, but his resurrection showed just how futile their efforts really were. The light has been shining since then and folks still must answer the question “what will you do with Jesus who is called the Christ?” Will you accept suffering as an indication that you are recognized to be like Jesus?
Happy suffering like our Savior.
