State Museum’s gift shop offering exclusive SC items for holiday season

The South Carolina State Museum is officially prepared for the holiday season.

The Cotton Mill Exchange, located on the left side of the main lobby, has fully stocked shelves with unique seasonal gift items. Almost all the merchandise is related to South Carolina, and/or made by artists within the state.

According to Retail Manager Scottie Nicholson, many of the holiday items are exclusive to the museum. “They’re made just for us,” she said. Merchandise includes palmetto tree throw pillows, Philip Simmons gate bookmarks and frames, ornaments in the shape of palmetto trees and the South Carolina state seal, and Old English Staffordshire plates with a print of the South Carolina State House.

Nicholson said Clemson and Carolina merchandise is also available. “We represent both, but the Clemson stuff is flying out. There aren’t that many places in Columbia to buy it, for obvious reasons,” she laughed.

There is a section of the store that offers a variety of packaged food items like Adluh grits, Carolina gold rice, chocolate-covered pecans, and Gillespie peanuts. “All foods are South Carolina-based,” Nicholson said. “When you don’t know what to get someone, you can’t go wrong with food.”

Additionally, there are about five different soap and candle companies with merchandise available in the Cotton Mill Exchange, as well as local potters and basket-makers’ work.

“We offer items you won’t find anywhere else,” said Nicholson.

The Cotton Mill Exchange opens at 10 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and noon on Sundays. Every Tuesday, the store remains open until 8 p.m.

“Tasting Tuesdays” will take place each Tuesday in December from 5 to 8 p.m. Guests will be able to sample South Carolina-made food from local companies, enjoy samples of local beer, wine and cider while they shop.
