State Museum’s Garage Sale Returns
Exhibit props, graphics, office furniture and more for sale to benefit the museum
COLUMBIA, S.C.—The South Carolina Museum is cleaning out its prop and exhibit storage areas and is selling a variety of unique items to the public in its Garage Sale on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. – noon (8 – 9 a.m. special members-only preview sale). Whether you are looking for something to hang on your walls or looking for your next weekend DIY project, the State Museum has the perfect treasure waiting to go in your home, school, office or church.
“The garage sale is lot of fun and serves two great purposes,” said Willie Calloway, State Museum executive director. “It allows the public to own a little piece of the museum through items associated with past exhibits, and it supports the museum and our future exhibits.”
There will be props and graphics from previous exhibits for sale, including large and small objects from Tutankhamun: Return of the King and Secrets of the Maya. Also included are poster-size framed space prints from previous traveling exhibits, framed digital photography prints from Columbia photographer Bill Helms and several sizes of open wood frames.
For the avid DIYers, the museum has plenty of great options. An assortment of materials from the museum’s exhibits workshop will be in the sale, including wood, plastic and metal pieces. The museum has the kids covered, too. From a model NASA spacecraft, to interactive educational displays and hands-on play equipment, to books and toys – the museum has something for kids of all ages.
Now that the Cotton Mill Exchange museum store has moved to a new and larger location, several of the store’s old fixtures need a new home. Ranging in size, the museum will have a variety of fixtures, display cases and stands in this year’s sale. There also will be office furniture, supplies and AV equipment available for purchase.
The museum will hold a “Black Bag” sale when the larger sale is over at noon, in which guests can purchase a black bag for only $5 and fill it with anything left over from the sale. All proceeds from the sale will go to support the State Museum. The event will be held in the Congaree Room on the second floor of the museum. There is no admission fee to attend the sale. To learn more, visit scmuseum.org or call (803) 898-4921.
Please note: There are no artifacts in the garage sale. All items in the sale are props and were produced to enhance exhibits. No state funds were used to purchase any of the objects in the sale.
