SOLICITOR’S SIDEBAR: “COLUMBIA WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FELONY DUI RESULTING IN DEATH”
Columbia, SC – Last month, 53 year old, Aliza Lee Brown, pleaded guilty to 1 count of felony DUI resulting in death, before the Honorable Robert E. Hood. She was sentenced to a 15 year sentence, which was suspended to 8 years with 3 years’ probation and a $10,100 fine.
On the evening of April 6, 2013, Aliza Lee Brown struck and killed 26 year old, Jeremy Ricardo Hayes, who was walking in the median of US 321/Fairfield Road. Ms. Brown was witnessed purchasing cigarettes and beer at an El Cheapo Gas Station immediately preceding the incident. When she left the store, she drove down the median of the highway, as if it were a proper lane of travel. When she approached the intersection of US 321/Fairfield Road and Crane Church Road, the vehicle that she was driving struck Mr. Hayes from behind, ultimately resulting in his death.
Ms. Brown reported that she believed she had been hit by another car. She was transported to Richland County Medical Center. Brown later admitted that she had consumed 5-6 beers; and her blood alcohol level tested at .255, more than three times the legal limit of .08.
