So You Want to Help?
Dr. Jed N. Snyder
What do people need? How can you help? Do you want to help? These questions are vital to a sensitive person who is open to help others.
Perhaps four words can give each of us some direction as we reach out. Nutrition, hygiene, exercise and healthcare. I cannot go into each of these but will do so at my internet site, called jedsnyder.com. This site should be up and functional soon if it is not when you read this.
When we speak of nutrition, we all have a certain sense of what this involves when speaking physically. Large amounts of fruits and vegetables, small amounts of meat, excepting fish and poultry and enough carbohydrates to supply the energy we need for daily activities.
Similarly, we need Bible reading, listening to good music, good teaching and encouragement to nourish our spiritual persons. No one who grew up with an involved mother will forget, “Go wash your hands. It is time to eat.” Hygiene is always important. However, unfortunately, in the spiritual and emotional areas of life, hygiene, that is, confession of sin and faults is frequently not given its proper place. Dirty hearts and minds make for illness and injury.
Exercise can never be overlooked in the physical realm. Some become extremely weak due to a lack of consistent cardio-pumping exercise. We all know this in our heads even if we have a harder time fulfilling it in our weekly routine. Spiritual exercise is equally important or likely more important. We used a phrase, “do it, do it, do it” to guide us when we became tired or lazy. How to stay well? Go share your faith with a person in need. You will be amazed at how God helps you as you seek to help others. Remember the “golden rule.” “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
Happy helping and being helped.
