Sheriff Leon Lott Receives 2015 SCLEOA Past President’s Award
During the 2015 South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association (SCLEOA) Banquet, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott received the Jackie Swindler Award for Excellence. The event was held recently at the Marriott Resort at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach .
The Jackie Swindler Award for excellence was created to recognize those in our law enforcement community who exemplify the highest standards of ethics, integrity and professionalism and to honor a past president who represents the highest ideals of the SCLEOA. The past presidents stated that it was their honor and privilege to nominate Sheriff Leon Lott for this prestigious award.
Throughout his almost 40 year career, the Sheriff has upheld the highest standards of excellence and integrity. Sheriff Leon Lott consistently promotes ethics, commitment, courage, integrity and excellence in law enforcement and refuses to accept anything less than those same standards from those he leads.
Sheriff Leon Lott has time and again promoted the ideals and programs of the SCLEOA and has never been a person who was satisfied with the status quo; constantly searching for innovative ways to improve the quality of life for the citizens he serves, but equally for the members of the SCLEOA and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. As an elected official he has successfully maintained a clear separation between his campaign efforts and the work of the Sheriff Department so that there is never a doubt that one does not impact the other. His ethics are above reproach and there are numerous examples, in his many years as Sheriff, when civilian complaints or self-initiated investigations into employee conduct have resulted not only in administrative action, but on occasion’s criminal indictment and prosecution at his direction.
Since taking office Sheriff Leon Lott has implemented numerous programs and actions to ensure the Sheriff’s Department is providing the community with the best service possible. In recent months the Sheriff has taken the Department to new levels of success by implementing a new strategic plan, mission and vision and creating a department “self-test” that all personnel are required to assess their decisions on. Noting that this “self-test is totally based on ethics, scrutiny/transparency, integrity and legitimacy. This relates directly to the SCLEOA Past President’s Award because it goes to the heart of what Sheriff Leon Lott stands for and expects every day from his personnel.
Sheriff Leon Lott served as President of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association from 2006-2007.
