Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott congratulates the newest Motorcycle Patrol Deputies on receiving their certifications from the State of South Carolina Department of Public Safety, SC Highway Patrol. On Friday, July 23, 2015, Corporal Mickey Johnson and Deputy William Carlson completed and passed their Police Motorcycle Proficiency Riding Test at the driving range at the McEntire Air Force Base.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that this was the final proficiency test after a grueling 2 week course, which generally has a low pass rate. Corporal Johnson and Deputy Carlson maneuvered through several very difficult preset courses and were graded on not hitting cones, dropping a motorcycle, etc. Both Johnson and Carlson worked extremely hard to reach this point. Sheriff Leon Lott and all at the Richland County Sheriff’s Department are very proud of them both for excelling in the course and receiving their certifications.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that the Motorcycle Patrol is part of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s Traffic Safety Unit. The RCSD Traffic Safety Unit has a priority of keeping our roadways safe and works hard everyday to positively alter driving behavior by increasing awareness and knowledge of traffic safety and laws. Traffic Safety Unit deputies also attend community meetings and conduct educational presentations as part of the department’s community policing aspect, as well as to proactively deter dangerous driving. Sheriff Leon Lott added that it is with the help of the cautious drivers that the RCSD Traffic Safety Unit has continued success. Remember: Drive Alert….Arrive Alive.
