Scholarships Available for Summer Transportation Institute
Benedict College will host a Summer Transportation Institute from July 7- July 31, 2019 for youth entering grades 9 – 11 during the 2019-2020 school year. The purpose of the Institute is to create awareness and expose high school students to career opportunities in the transportation industry.
The Transportation Institute is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Office of Civil Rights, the South Carolina Division Office of FHWA and South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The four-week residential program is a structured learning opportunity for youth in the secondary school systems of South Carolina. Students selected for the program will receive scholarships to pay for tuition, room, meals, books and other supplies. A limited number of applicants will be accepted based on eligibility (see criteria below) and receipt of the applications. Once enrolled, students are required to attend the entire Institute.
All participating students must meet the following criteria:
• Completed algebra or be qualified for enrollment in algebra for the upcoming school year.
• Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• Express an interest in a career in engineering, science, transportation, or technology.
In addition to completing the application, applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or school official, a one-page essay, and an official transcript. The application deadline is June 24, 2019. Selected participants will be notified by June 26, 2019.
