SC Carnival to celebrate Caribbean culture in Columbia

The sights, sounds, and tastes of the Caribbean are coming to Columbia.

The Carolina Caribbean Culture Festival announced the dates for the 2019 South Carolina Carnival. The CCCF was founded by a group of Carribean-Americans to promote, introduce, and expand their culture in the Carolinas.

According to CCCF representatives, there will be seven celebratory events beginning Thursday, June 6, and will continue through June 9.

The first event will be incorporated into Columbia’s “First Thursday,” when local artists and their works are featured at different galleries down Main Street, beginning at 6 p.m. The next event, “RISE n LYME” will be Friday from noon to 5 p.m. Friday’s event is described as the “green & white welcome day party,” at Old Chicago (802 Gervais Street). Then from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., the “Electric Jouvert glow edition” will be held at the Tapps Arts Center, with well-known DJs and emcees.

One of the biggest events of the festival, the Caribbean culture parade, will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. The parade will begin at 1725 Harden St. and move down Blanding Street, featuring hundreds of patrons with Caribbean costumes and flags. Immediately following the parade, a free block party will take place on Main Street (between Laurel and Richland) until 9 p.m. There will be a live concert with performances by the Soca King of NYC “Lyrical” from Trinidad & Tobago, food, games, and family-friendly activities.

An after-party will be held from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. at Wet Willies upstairs (800 Gervais Street) with a line up of DJs spinning a variety of genres.

The “finale” of the festival will be held Sunday. “PUNCH’D” will be a rum-punch experience, held at the Historical Robert Mills House (1616 Blanding Street) from noon to 5 p.m.
