Salt-N-Pepa pushes Columbia into 2020
One of the most popular bands of the 90s helped Columbia welcome the 20s Tuesday night.
Legendary hip-hop duo Salt-N-Pepa headlined the city’s annual free New Year’s Eve celebration, Famously Hot New Year.
The event on Main and Gervais streets near the State House brought thousands downtown, kicking off at 6:30 with lots of food, drinks and souvenirs for sale. Local band Cottontown Soul Society and Charleston’s The High Divers opened the concert.
Salt-N-Pepa took the stage just before 11 and delivered what the crowd came to see, a high-energy set featuring hits like “Push It,” “Shake Your Thang,” “Shoop,” and many other favorites.
“We’ve loved them since the 80s,” said LaStarra Greene, who attended with three of her closest friends. “We wouldn’t have missed this for the world.”
A countdown to midnight was followed by what organizers say was the biggest New Year’s Eve fireworks display in South Carolina, lighting the sky behind the State House dome.
Famously Hot New Year began in 2011, and is funded by public and private partnerships. More information is available at famouslyhotnewyear.com.
