Richland One Offers More Incentives to Bus Driver Applicants
Signing bonuses, paid training and college tuition reimbursement are among the incentives that Richland One is offering to qualified bus driver applicants.
Richland One offers bus drivers some of the best and most competitive financial incentives in the Midlands, according to Keith Terry, transportation manager with the district’s Office of Student Transportation Services.
“Richland One starts its bus drivers at $14.63/hour, that’s among the highest pay of school districts in the Midlands,” Terry said. “Plus, we offer flexible hours and $500 signing bonuses for drivers who already have their CDL license/certification and one year’s experience. With the incentives we offer, many times our applicants will end up making more with us than in their current position.”
But one of the most exciting advantages Richland One offers is paid CDL (commercial driver’s license) training for interested applicants who do not have CDL and bus driver certification.
“Interested, qualified applicants who participate in the six-week CDL training program will get paid during that period. With our training program, once you pass and are certified, you are guaranteed a position,” Terry said.
Applicants, who must be at least 18 years old, also must have a high school diploma (or GED) and pass rigorous South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) background checks.
Terry said Richland One has many opportunities to offer bus drivers, including a great working environment. “More than half of our 284 bus drivers, assistants and other employees have been with the district from 10 to 40 years,” he said. “We must be doing something right to have that kind of loyalty and longevity.”
There are even more advantages. Terry says the flexible schedules of bus drivers allow them more time to take care of family or other responsibilities and interests. The district also offers college tuition reimbursement for drivers who want to pursue a higher education degree.
