A Richland One Middle College student recently received a Concurrent Resolution of Academic Achievement from the South Carolina Legislature, which is one of the state’s highest civilian honors.
Lamar Richards, a senior at Richland One Middle College, received the honor along with his research partner Austin Greer, a student at the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics. State Senators Mike Fanning and Mike Gambrell presented Lamar and Austin with the resolution March 7 during a legislative session at the South Carolina State House.
The legislative recognition acknowledged the pair as the first high school students to win the 2018 Louisiana State University National Undergraduate Research Competition. Their mechanical and chemical engineering research focused on finding more aesthetically-pleasing and cost-effective alternatives to currently used dental-ware.
The honors don’t stop there. Lamar and Austin have been invited to present their research April 10-14 at the prestigious National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Atlanta.
Lamar and Austin have 5.1 GPAs and both scored in the highest percentile on the ACT/SAT. They will be completing more research this summer at the University of Pittsburgh.
