Richland One Has Highest Number of Junior Scholars in the Midlands

Richland One is proud to announce that 195 Richland One eighth-graders have been named South Carolina Junior Scholars by the South Carolina Department of Education.

Junior Scholars are students recognized for exceptionally high academic achievement and intellectual ability. Richland One had the most Junior Scholars in the Midlands for the 2018-2019 school year and the fourth-highest number in the state.

To earn the title of Junior Scholar, students must score a 550 or higher on the evidence-based reading and writing or 530 or higher on the math portion of the PSAT/NMSQT. Additionally, students who participated in Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (TIP) during their seventh-grade year and met the requirements outlined by that program also qualify.

The purpose of the South Carolina Junior Scholars program is to identify students and provide opportunities that will facilitate their intellectual growth, broaden their individual interests and promote their academic achievement. The program includes summer opportunities in collaboration with participating South Carolina colleges and universities. Students also can list this special recognition on their applications to colleges and universities.
