(Richland PIO) – Richland County Court Appointed Special Advocates (RC CASA) Project Manager Sharon Walker will serve on the national association’s Legal and Advocacy Committee.

The committee’s purpose is to provide guidance and support to National CASA on legal and public policy issues on a local, state and federal level. It also gives members the chance to share their expertise, seek advice from their peers and help craft national policies for the organization.

“National CASA is very fortunate to have Sharon serving on this committee,” said RC CASA Executive Director Paige Greene. “Sharon’s passion for advocacy for maltreated children is unmatched. She will truly be an asset to the Legal and Advocacy Committee.”

CASA’s overall goal is to serve as advocates for abused and neglected children that appear in family court. The organization does this by providing legal representation and volunteers to make sure children are placed in safe homes.

Walker said her interest in public policy is what led her to apply to serve on the national committee. She hopes to use her legal background and being a non-practicing attorney to provide a different perspective. Walker will be the first person from RC CASA to serve on the national Legal and Advocacy Committee.

“I am looking forward to taking my experience on a local level to benefit other programs and to use it to speak on national policies. I think that will be amazing,” she said.
