Representative Leon Howard Reelected to 3M Committee
Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus (SCLBC) is pleased to announce that SC Representative Leon Howard has been reelected for his fourth term as Chairman of the Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs Committee (3M Committee). This makes him the only African-American and Democrat to chair a standing committee in either the SC House of Representatives or Senate.
SCLBC chairman, John R. King, says, “The reelection of Representative Howard is more significant than ever given the current political, social and civil climate. With the Committee’s broad reach and oversight, I feel confident that the interests of minorities, senior citizens, veterans and our rural population will continue to be upheld.”
The 3M Committee deals with legislation involving medical matters, public assistance, veterans’ affairs, military matters, police regulations, local government, and corrections.
Most recently, the Committee has passed bills that lowers the minimum age of patients for pharmacist’s administration of flu vaccines from 18 to 12; increases the required annual training for family childcare home operators and employees from two hours to ten hours; and extends reemployment rights to military personnel that live in South Carolina who are members of another state’s national or state guard.
