‘Repack the Backpack’ Free Event Will Replenish School Supplies

Columbia, S.C. – Recognizing that some families run out of school supplies approaching the end of the academic year, BlueChoice® HealthPlan Medicaid invites parents and children to a celebration in Columbia where they can pick up free supplies and snacks, enjoy entertainment by local groups and leave with new haircuts and manicures.

Called “Repack the Backpack,” (#repackthebackpackSC) the free event will take place 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Martin Luther King Park in Columbia. BlueChoice HealthPlan Medicaid is organizing the event with the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department and Alpha Media Columbia (Hot 103.9 & 93.9 and The Big DM 101.3) as co-hosts.

“We’re planning this event to be fun and helpful. A lot of groups will be participating, and we’re preparing for a huge turnout,” said BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina President Scott Graves. “We are proud to invest in the youth of our state.”

Activities will be held outside and indoors. In case of rain, all activities will move indoors.

Numerous vendors and community groups will have stations where attendees may pick up information and free school supplies.

Alpha Media will provide live radio remote broadcasting throughout the event on Hot 103.9 & 93.9 and The Big DM 101.3. Walgreens and Wal-Mart will offer health screenings. Virginia College will provide haircuts and manicures and will assist with health screenings.

Richland Library will have its mobile sprinter on hand to play music, provide free Wi-Fi and offer children’s crafts.  Doctors Care will conduct free sports physicals on first-come, first-served basis.

BlueChoice HealthPlan Medicaid will set up an interactive fun zone equipped with a video game truck, face painting, fitness fest, obstacle courses, giant games and a snack shack. There will be free backpacks for the first 500 participants.

Entertainment by local groups will be scheduled every half hour on stage. The entertainment schedule will be released later.
