Prayers: Will God Say “Yes”?

Dr. Jed N. Snyder, President, Jesus Every Day Ministries, Inc.

Most of us can recite “The Lord’s Prayer.”   Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.  Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Matthew 6:9-13

This praying is reverent.  We address God as “Father in heaven.”  We acknowledge His holiness, “hallowed be your name.”  We offer Him our respect by desiring that His will be accomplished. We then show that we are receptive and responsive to His gifts.

He cares for our daily needs and keeps us from facing temptation that is beyond our ability.  This truth is amplified: God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

But for prayers to be answered in positive ways we will be ready to forgive others as we anticipate God’s forgiveness of our sins.  Remember Jesus’ story of the master who forgave the huge debt of his servant only to have that same servant refuse to forgive the paltry little debt of his fellow servant. The unforgiving servant was severely punished for his lack of compassion.

God wants to say “yes” to our prayers.  The forgiving heart of the penitent one will find God eager to say “yes.”

God is involved with our prayers. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27

Happy praying so God can say “yes.”
