July 7: MaterniTea Support Group:

Mothers and their babies are encouraged to join MaterniTea, a free breastfeeding support group. The group will meet Monday, July 7, 10-11 a.m., at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park Dr., in the first-floor Rainey Room. July 8: South Carolina Philharmonic Concert at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital:

The South Carolina Philharmonic will be stopping by throughout the year to perform for hospitalized children and their families at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. This month’s concert will take place Tuesday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m., at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park Dr., in the first-floor atrium. The concert also will be broadcast live on patient televisions for staff, patients and visitors to enjoy.

Bariatric Surgery Seminar:

Learn more about weight loss surgery at one of Palmetto Health Weight Management Center’s free seminars. The Bariatric Surgery Seminar will take place Tuesday, July 8, 6-7 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., in the ground-floor Classrooms A & B. Excess weight can limit your activities, erode your health and diminish your quality of life. The Weight Management Center at Palmetto Health offers real hope for lasting weight loss through bariatric surgery. Take 5—Free Prostate Cancer and Diabetes Screenings:

Palmetto Health’s Office of Community Health is offering free health screenings in July to help the community start good healthy habits this summer. Free prostate cancer (PSA blood test) and diabetes screenings will be held Thursday, July 10, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St. To register for a screening, call 803-296-CARE (2273). July 12: Women at Heart Early Screenings:

Early screenings for the 2014 Women at Heart event, a free heart-health forum and exhibition, are available by appointment Saturday, July 12, 7-10 a.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., ground-floor Classrooms D & E. Screenings will include a fasting lipid panel, blood pressure, body mass index, fasting glucose, as well as weight and waist circumference. Health screenings require a 12-hour fast. The one-day course, designed for teens ages 11-14, will provide information on nurturing childcare techniques, basic life-saving techniques, safety precautions and how and when to call for help. Each participant will receive a Safe Sitter Basics manual, a completion card and a t-shirt. July 15: Infant CPR Class:

Learn how to save your baby’s life in an emergency by attending Palmetto Health’s Infant CPR Class on Tuesday, July 15, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Palmetto Health Richland, 9 Richland Medical Park Dr., Suite 130. The class will illustrate infant CPR techniques from certified instructors. Participants will get the chance to practice CPR and choking maneuvers on infant mannequins. July 20-25: Camp Wonder Hands:

Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital presents Camp Wonder Hands, a free five-day camp for deaf and hard-of-hearing children ages 7-15, July 20-25, at Camp Kinard, near Batesburg-Leesville. Many of the children who attend Camp Wonder Hands cannot speak, so communications skills such as sign language, lip-reading, facial expressions and touch are used. Children attend the camp at no cost through scholarships provided by Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and private, civic or corporate donations. July 21: ★Good Grieving Program:

Children and teens are invited to participate in Good Grieving for Children on Monday, July 21, 5-8 p.m., at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Richland Medical Park Dr., in the first-floor conference room. CPR and BLS Classes:

The Palmetto Health-USC School of Medicine Simulation Center offers several classes open to the public. American Heart Association CPR and BLS (Basic Life Support) classes are offered weekly on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons; cost is $75. Heart Saver CPR classes are offered two Tuesday afternoons each month; cost is $50. All classes begin at 1:30 p.m. and course materials and a certification card are included. Free Diabetes Screenings:

Palmetto Health offers free diabetes screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:45-7:20 p.m., at 1801 Sunset Dr.; Thursdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., Office of Community Health. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

Free Cancer Screenings:

Palmetto Health offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-7 p.m., and the second Saturday of every month, 8 a.m.-noon at Palmetto Health Women’s Center, 1801 Sunset Dr. Free prostate cancer screenings,Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam, are offered the fourth Thursday of every month, 5:30-7 p.m. at 1801 Sunset Dr. Free PSA blood test prostate cancer screenings also are offered every Thursday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St. Find out more and see if you qualify for the free screenings by calling 803-296-CARE (2273) or visit PalmettoHealth.org/CommunityHealth for a full list of screening events.
