Jan. 9: 2015 Walk for Life/Race for Life

Join Palmetto Health Foundation for the Walk for Life/Race for Life on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Finlay Park in Columbia. This year, we’re celebrating 25 years of a movement in our community to take steps against breast cancer. All proceeds stay in our community at Palmetto Health Breast Center. Jan. 12: Weight Loss Surgery Seminar

The Weight Management Center at Palmetto Health will offer a free weight loss surgery seminar for individuals interested in bariatric surgery Tuesday, Jan. 12, 6-7 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist auditorium, 1501 Sumter St. The seminar will review the various types of weight loss surgery options and what to expect during and after surgery. Jan. 19: Free Tai Chi Lessons

The Palmetto Health Richland Trauma Center, in collaboration with the University of South Carolina School of Social Work, will sponsor an eight-week session of Tai Chi lessons for people age 60 and older. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan 19 through March 10, from 10-11 a.m. at the Lourie Center, 1650 Park Circle, Columbia. 

Jan. 21: Coffee Talk

               “Organizing Your Health”

The Healthy Palmetto Team is excited to offer a new series of learning sessions where coffee is not just blended with a little cream and sugar, but with some health tips and discussion as well. Bring your favorite cup of joe and join us for Coffee Talk Thursday, Jan. 21, 6-7 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, Classroom A, 1501 Sumter St. To register, contact Palmetto Health CareCall at 803-296-CARE (2273). 

Jan. 25: Good Grieving Program

The Good Grieving Program helps children ages 5 to 18 learn how to cope with the death of a loved one. There are four sessions throughout the year to help children through their normal grieving process and to help them adjust to the loss. Children are encouraged to attend all four sessions; they can work through the year and into the following year, if necessary, to complete all four sessions. The Good Grieving Program for parents/guardians is a one-session introduction to the child’s program that begins the same night. Both programs are free. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 22. Bariatric Support Groups:

The Weight Management Center of Palmetto Health offers support groups designed to meet the needs of patients who are two or more years post-surgery Monday, Jan. 11 and 25, noon-1:30 p.m., Weight Management Center, 1501 Laurel St. and Tuesday, Nov. 12 and 26, 6:30-8 p.m., Meeting Room 2 at the Breast Health Center, 1501 Sumter St. For more information, call 803-376-5982.

Free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings:

Palmetto Health will offer free diabetes, breast and cervical cancer screenings Tuesday, Jan. 25, 5:30-7 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 9, 8-11:30 a.m., at Palmetto Health Women’s Center, 1801 Sunset Dr. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

Take Five–Free Cancer and Diabetes Screenings:

Palmetto Health will offer free diabetes screenings Thursday Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Palmetto Health Baptist, 1501 Sumter St., Office of Community Health. To find out if you qualify or to register, call 803-296-CARE (2273).

CPR and BLS Classes:

American Heart Association CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) classes are offered weekly by the Palmetto Health/USC Simulation Center every Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Cost is $75. Heart Saver CPR classes are offered two Tuesday afternoons each month; cost is $50. All classes begin at 1 p.m. at 14 Medical Park, Suite 300, Palmetto Health Richland campus.
