Palmetto Health Foundation’s 24th Annual Walk for Life/Race for Life Oct. 18
Proceeds benefit Palmetto Health Breast Center
On ONE MORNING, thousands of walkers and runners will have ONE MISSION in mind—BEATING BREAST CANCER IN THE MIDLANDS. The 24th Walk for Life/Race for Life, presented by the South Carolina State Fair, will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, 8 a.m., at Finlay Park in Columbia, S.C. More than 9,000 registrants are expected to participate in a 3.1 mile walk or certified 5K or 10K run, both part of Tour de Columbia, with timing administered by Strictly Running. Registration is open now at WalkForLifeColumbia.org. Registration includes a neon pink T-shirt, and breast cancer survivors will receive a special pink bandana.
The South Carolina State Fair (held Oct. 8-19) is encouraging Walk for Life/Race for Life participants to take a “grand stand” against breast cancer in our community. As the presenting sponsor of Walk for Life/Race for Life 2014, the South Carolina State Fair is offering FREE admission to the Fair, valued at $10, to participants who wear the official event T-shirt on Saturday, Oct. 18 or Sunday, Oct. 19. The Fair’s “Pink Fair” will feature a breast cancer “Wall of Hope” in the Ellison Building, a pink and white breast cancer information tent to promote early detection and the importance of breast self exams and other special themed areas and on-site events. Palmetto Health Breast Center’s mobile mammography unit will be on site at the Fair Oct. 13, 16 and 17. Walk for Life/Race for Life participants are encouraged to be a part of a large human breast cancer ribbon photo that will be taken Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Fairgrounds. For details, visit SCStateFair.org.
Walk for Life began in 1991 when former First Lady of Columbia, Beth Coble, founded the event with Palmetto Health Breast Center staff. For 24 years, the event has educated women and men about the importance of early detection and has raised funds for the latest technology, programs and services for patients and families helped by Palmetto Health Breast Center. Proceeds from the event to date, totaling more than $7.5 million, including in-kind donations, stay in the Midlands at Palmetto Health Breast Center. Proceeds from the 2014 Walk for Life/Race for Life will be used to help fund Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, the latest technology in 3D mammography, for Palmetto Health Breast Center.
