New MTC Program Trains Community for High-Demand Careers in the Manufacturing Industry

Full scholarships available. Students finish in ten weeks.

Columbia, SC – Midlands Technical College (MTC) launched a new career program in its Corporate and Continuing Education Division that certifies participants to become manufacturing production technicians in as few as 10 weeks.

The South Carolina Manufacturing Certification (SCMC) program prepares students to land jobs in the Midlands’ growing manufacturing industry. Students receive hands-on training in areas like safety, quality practices and measurement, and the manufacturing process in a simulated manufacturing environment.

Scholarships are available to cover the full cost of tuition for this program, normally more than $2,100.

Successful graduates will be qualified for entry level manufacturing positions at many area manufacturing facilities. Jerome Stutts, one of the first to complete the SCMC program has already been hired by local tire manufacturer, Michelin.

“Jerome is great example of this manufacturing certification program at work,” said Randy Crutfield, site hiring manager for Michelin North America in Lexington, SC. “He came to us with a background in trucking, but there wasn’t necessarily anything in his background to indicate he would excel in an industrial environment. The program and training gave him the confidence to better represent himself in an interview, and he was selected to work at our Lexington site.”

Starting salaries for production technicians in the Midlands range from $25,000 to $35,000. With experience and additional training, these employees can go on to earn salaries of $60,000 or more.

Ideal candidates for the SCMC program include the unemployed, underemployed and veterans. Applicants must successfully complete a drug screen and background check, score Silver or better on the WorkKeys assessments, and provide documentation of at least a high school diploma or GED.

Details about eligibility and the application process for this scholarship opportunity are covered at information sessions offered on several MTC campuses. For information on upcoming classes and information sessions, visit midlandstech.edu/cce/scmc or call (803) 732-0432.
