MTC President Sonny White Receives 2014 Energy Leadership Award
Columbia, SC – Midlands Technical College President Dr. Marshall “Sonny” White, Jr., was honored by the Charlotte Business Journal Friday as a 2014 Energy Leadership Award recipient. The award honors individuals who have played a key role in making the Carolinas a regional and global player in the energy industry.
White has been a key figure in South Carolina’s nuclear renaissance and has led significant efforts to bring together business, community and educational partners, as well as through his own initiatives at Midlands Technical College.
White was selected for the award, in part, for his role in building the foundation of training for South Carolina’s next generation of the nuclear workforce.
When South Carolina Electric and Gas announced its plans to build two new reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station, White worked with energy leaders to create a one-of-a-kind Nuclear Systems Technology program at Midlands Technical College, the only program in South Carolina that trains nuclear systems technicians to maintain and operate nuclear power plants and equipment. Under White’s leadership, MTC became the leading organization in the establishment of a Regional Center for Nuclear Education and Training in the Southeast, and received a share of $3.1 million from the National Science Foundation to fund the center.
“What distinguishes Dr. White and the impact that he has had on the region is his ability to create and implement a vision,” said Randall “Mack” Jackson, Chair of the Midlands Technical College Commission. “He has a big-picture view of all of the elements it takes to create a sustainable energy industry and he has worked diligently in each part of the process. He’s helped put the Carolinas on the map for nuclear energy and will leave a legacy that will allow the state to expand its role in nuclear energy and energy as a whole.”
White has been Co-Chair of NuHub, a consortium created to maximize the economic impact of nuclear energy, since its founding. Through his leadership of NuHub, he advocated for the industry and brought together the decision makers in the community, government, industry and education to support nuclear power and energy in general.
