Miss South Carolina competition postponed until 2021

The Miss America Organization announced the postponement of the 2021 Miss America Competition. The scholarship competition was scheduled to be held in September, however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the board of trustees decided to push back the competition until the fourth quarter of 2021.

Following the Miss America Organization’s protocol, the Miss South Carolina Organization’s board of trustees made the decision to postpone the 2021 Miss South Carolina competition which was originally rescheduled from this June to late July of this year.

The decision to postpone all competitions until 2021 came as a result of understanding that each state will not reopen on the same schedule.

Benson Odom, executive director for the Miss Columbia and Miss Capital City competitions said this change comes as a new, but exciting one. Along with all other executive directors of local South Carolina competitions, Odom will have his current titleholders to mentor for another year.

“This is giving me the opportunity to have an extra year to build a better relationship with my titleholders and have more time to help them with personal development and growth,” said Odom. “We are making up for time missed together because of quarantine and social distancing.”

Candidates of the competition are also thrilled about holding their current titles for an additional year.

“I’m really excited because I wanted this title so badly since it represents my home,” said Madison Coffman, Miss Capital City 2020. “I’ll also have the opportunity to do some of the things I had planned before the virus hit and cancelled those events.”

Coffman’s social impact initiative is called “the #lovethyneighbor initiative,” which promotes building better relationships within communities through embracing diversity and inclusion.

The Miss America Organization has not postponed a competition since the Great Depression. The organization will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021.

Local candidates will continue to prepare for the 2021 competition and raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the national philanthropy of Miss America.
