Lisa Long Cotton; “Attorney at Law”

Lisa Long Cotten is an attorney at the Mike Kelly Law Group in downtown Columbia, South Carolina.   Affectionately referred to by her co-workers as “the voice of reason”, Lisa concentrates her practice areas on Social Security Disability, Workers’ Compensation and Personal Injury.   Lisa is a native of Eastover, South Carolina where she attended WebberElementarySchool.  Lisa graduated from Lower Richland High School in 1991 and attended the University of South Carolina graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science (Magna Cum Laude) in 1995.  She went on to earn a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1998.  Lisa was admitted to practice law in the State of South Carolina that same year.

Lisa began her legal career at Carolina Regional Legal Services in Florence, South Carolina.  She also proudly served as an Assistant Solicitor for the Ninth Judicial Circuit in Charleston, South Carolina.  Lisa made the transition to private practice in 2003 becoming a partner in the first African-American female law firm in CharlestonCounty.  Lisa was also an adjunct professor at TridentTechnicalCollege in the area of Criminal Law.  Lisa returned to RichlandCounty in 2007.

During her legal career, Lisa has been involved in numerous professional and community service organizations.  Lisa is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.  She was also duly inducted into Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society as an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina.  She is an alumnus of Leadership Columbia Class of 2010.  Lisa is also involved in numerous committees of the South Carolina Bar Association including the Workers’ Compensation Section, Law Related Education Committee, South Carolina Women Lawyers Association and South Carolina Black Lawyers Association.  Lisa is the current Fifth Judicial Circuit Co-Chair of the Resolution of Fee Disputes Board, which is charged with resolving fee disputes between attorneys and their clients.  Lisa is a member of the Richland County Bar Association and the American Bar Association.  She is also admitted to practice law before the United States District Court-District of South Carolina.

Lisa resides in Blythewood, South Carolina with her husband, Wilbert and son, Myles and attends RoundTopBaptistChurch.   If you ask Lisa what she believes is her greatest accomplishment, she will tell you it is raising an intelligent, compassionate and well -rounded son.   Lisa firmly believes that you should treat others the way you want to be treated.  Words she definitely lives by.  People often say “I want it all”.  I thought this was cliché until I met this modern day superwoman.

    Hi, My name is Khaylis Scott i was in a bad car accident on march 23,2014 which ive broken my bac, fractured my neck and had surgery on my right ring finger and middle finger. Since then the nerves in my fingers never came back and im still experincing excruciating sharp pains in my neck and back, especially while working on the many jobs I’ve had since then. I also was made to wear a halo that was screwed in the back and front of my head that came down to my upper chest for 3 months. Being that i didnt have insurance at the time i was not sent to any other doctors for my follow up or anything i havent seen or heard from any doctors about anything.. With the pain im experincing im not even sure if im healed or if ive healed correctly. Ive been denied for diasbility so many times bt im going to try once more to see what happens.
