Grammy Nominated Gospel Artist, Vashawn Mitchell, to perform at Benedict College 31st Annual Harambee Festival

Columbia, SC – Grammy Nominated Gospel Artist Vashawn Mitchell will be the headliner for this year’s Harambee Festival performing his hit single “ Nobody Greater.”  Jazz guitarist Terence  Young, Vocalist TiffanyJ, and the soulful LaSell Williams will also performing on Saturday, February 29, 2020.

The Harambee Festival is one of the largest college-sponsored festivals in the nation. It is an annual event for the entire family and community that has plenty of food, music, fun, art, and those hard-to find merchandise items.  The event features live stage performances throughout the day. The admission is free.

Friday – February 28th, 2020 – 5:00 p.m. The Talent Showcase will feature live performances by up and coming South Carolina artists   in various  performance categories to include hip-hop, dancing, poetry, and more. There will also be food and merchandise vendors. 

Saturday – February 29th, 2020 – 9:30am-5:30 pm  The 31st Annual Harambee Festival’s vibrant environment will showcase live performances by Grammy Nominated Artist Vashaw Mitchell, jazz guitarist Terence Young, and the soulful sounds of TiffanyJ and LaSell Williams. 

Sunday – March 1, 2020 – The 31st Annual Harambee Festival concludes with  Grammy Nominated Gospel Artist Vashawn Mitchell leading a concert with the Harambee Festival Community Choir which includes the Benedict College Gospel Choir, in Antisdel Chapel at 4:00pm. 

VaShawn Mitchell was a seasoned singer, songwriter, producer, and musical director with four albums to his credit before he broke through with his massive hit single  “Nobody Greater”,  the most played gospel song of the year in 2011 that spent a combined total of 9 weeks on Billboard’s Gospel songs chart. Mitchell was the most nominated artist at the 27th Annual Stellar Awards; receiving 11 nominations  and walking away with 6 statues. He then released other soundtracks in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2019. Mitchell has written Stellar and Grammy award winning  songs for Smokie Norful, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and Bishop Paul Morton. He also wrote “So Satisfied,” “”Don’t Last,” and “My Worship is for Real.”
Mitchell is appearing at the Harambee Festival as part of the Second Annual Gospel Heritage. 

Jazz Guitarist Terence Young has earned the reputation of being one of the most talented and electrifying lead guitarists in the nation. Young has released 10 albums to date, ranging from smooth jazz and R&B, to gospel, instrumental rock, and his original guitar compositions. He has shared the stage with renowned recording artists including The Temptations, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, BabyFace, Charlie Wilson, Envogue, Morris Day and the Time, Al Jarreau, Roberta Flack, Rachelle Ferrell, Gerald Albright, Clarence Carter and Joe Sample. In addition to performing with these top talents, Terence has also performed with and was Music Director for the Legendary Ashford and Simpson, Lenny Williams, Aaron Hall and Angie Stone. Terence’s talent can be heard on the Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute CD with R&B Queen, Angie Stone.

Entrepreneur and singer-songwriter, TiffanyJ, is a great South Carolina artist, and businesswoman. Outside of her music she owns a business called Super Beauty to encourage young African American girls to raise their self-esteem.

LaSell Willaims has a smooth tenor voice that has mesmerized thousands while opening for many R&B legends including  the Temptations, Pattie Labelle, The Manhattans, all-girls band Kymaxx ,and gospel artist JMoss and 21:03.

The Harambee Festival also provides  free health screenings, a Children’s Village, Women’s Village, Bounce Houses, a bake contest within a family friendly environment.
