Fort Jackson soldiers in training heading home for holidays

More than 9,000 trainees and soldiers in training will head home for the holidays this week for Fort Jackson Victory Block Leave.

According to representatives, they will begin their journeys Wednesday night and have two weeks to spend time with their families and friends. The holiday time will allow them to take a well-deserved break from their training to reconnect with loved ones.

Fort Jackson transportation planners and travel offices have planned a smooth departure for the soldiers who will travel by commercial airlines, buses, trains, and with family members in their personal vehicles.

Commercial buses will be leaving Fort Jackson late Wednesday for airports in Columbia and Charlotte.

Anyone traveling by air will encounter much higher congestion than normal, as military personnel in training from all services head home for the holidays.

Fort Jackson will have cadre at the Charlotte and Columbia airports who will oversee the movement of soldiers, ensure proper behavior, assist with processing through security, ensure soldiers board the proper transportation for home and again when they return to ensure they identify and take care of any soldier who becomes delayed or stranded.
