Fort Jackson Holds “Wild” Retiree Appreciation Days

FORT JACKSON, SC — Fort Jackson Retirement Services wants all military retirees in the area to take a walk on the wild side this month when the annual Retiree Appreciation Days take place May 15-17.

Activities are open to retirees of all branches of service and maybe a bit more mild than wild as they focus on retiree health benefits, educational assistance and sports activities.

Retiree Appreciation Days have previously had an estimated attendance of more than 2,000 retirees who participated in activities.

A continental breakfast is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. at the Fort Jackson Officers’ Club. Enjoy free refreshments and board the buses at 8:30 a.m. for transportation to the ceremony at Hilton Field.

The Basic Combat Training Graduation Ceremony and salute to retirees is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at Hilton Field. The guest speaker will be Maj. Gen. (Retired) Abraham Turner, former Fort Jackson Post Commanding General. Seating for retirees will be reserved in the VIP area. Please RSVP at 751-4643.

A Golf Tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m., May 17, at the Fort Jackson Golf Club. The tournament is expected to be a crowd pleaser, said David Ratliff, Chief Warrant Officer 5 (Retired), Secretary, Fort Jackson Retiree Council. Ratliff said retirees have already begun to call in and request more information and express great interest in participating in this year’s tournament.

Golf Club Members pay $40 per person. Non-members and guest prices are $50 per person. Prices include cart and user fees, prizes, a barbecue lunch and grounds maintenance fees for non-members.

The Main Exchange and Commissary will participate in Retiree Appreciation Days; Friday and Saturday with in-store sales beginning 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the Commissary, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the Main Exchange.

A Retiree Health and Benefits Exposition is scheduled for May 18. The expo will take place at the Solomon Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. An assortment of health services and informational organizations will be on-site at the expo to include Moncrief Army Community Hospital and South Carolina Department of Veteran Affairs. Retirees are also invited to participate in the Victory Bingo and No Tap Bowling; both events are scheduled for May 18.
