LOUISVILLE, Ky., – Dutch Fork Middle School’s Vex Robotics team competed in the Vex Robotics World Championship held in Louisville, Kentucky and took home the Build Award. The Build Award is given to a team that has built a well-crafted and constructed robot that also shows a clear dedication to safety and attention to detail.

The team made up of Tyler Overbay, Alex Perez, Raymond Jedlicka, Thoriso Watson, Darian Sulejmanovic, David Schelling and coach Robin Amick qualified for the World Championship by winning the Excellence Award at the state level, the highest award offered at a Vex competition. The Vex Robotics World Championship brings together over 1400 teams from around the world. 164 of those teams consist of middle schools.

“As a coach, I am so incredibly proud of how these students represented themselves and District Five,” Amick said. “These young men worked tirelessly, both before and during the World Championship to create, troubleshoot and improve their design. They also demonstrated great sportsmanship and true collaborative skills during competitions. It was an honor to see them rewarded by the judges at Worlds!”

As part of the criteria, judges looked for robots that had a professional feel and quality look to them, with clear attention to detail in construction, efficient use of mechanical and electronic components and reliability on the competition field.

The goal of Dutch Fork Middle’s robot was to work with an alliance to place as many stars and cubes on the opposite side of a field while preventing opposing teams from sending components to their side.

“The World Competition had a mixture of working hard and enjoying our surroundings,” Perez said. “This experience will be one I will remember for the rest of my life!”
