A team of Dreher High School students placed 18th in the 2015 U.S. Academic Decathlon in Los Angeles where they matched intellectual skills with students from the United States, England and China.
As state winners, Dreher’s Academic Decathlon team qualified for the nationals. Members of the team include juniors Zach Aull, Emily Shimizu and Cari Tuel, as well as seniors George Bilderback, Abel Ferry, Patrick Fox, Gabrielle Fulton, Evan Owen, Kyle Ryan, Cameron Sawyer and Nick Seymour. Dreher’s team is coached by math teachers Christina Murphy and Linda Williams, along with the support of guidance counselor Kevin Kirkley.
Linda Williams credits the students’ success to their commitment and love of learning. “Our students are to be congratulated not only for the medals and awards won at the national competition, but also for their devotion to the pursuit of academic excellence,” said Williams. “These students met every morning for one hour before the start of the school day in order to prepare for the competition. They represented our school and state well in Los Angeles. We are extremely proud of Dreher’s decathletes.”
The U.S. Academic Decathlon is the most rigorous academic competition available for high school students. The theme for this year’s competition was energy. Students were tested on economics, music, art, mathematics, language, literature, science and social science. Students also delivered impromptu speeches, were judged on their interview skills and wrote essays.
In addition to the national ranking, several Dreher students won individual achievement awards including the following:
