District Five school receives statewide environmental award

H.E. Corley Elementary School was honored as a 2014 Certified Green Steps School during a District Five school board meeting.

IRMO – A Lexington-Richland District Five school has been named a 2014 Certified Green Steps School.

H. E. Corley Elementary joins 16 schools statewide this year in receiving the award, which recognizes schools that take sustainable steps to conserve, protect and restore their local environment. The school was recognized for the award during an Oct. 13 school board meeting.

“We’re honored to be a Green Steps School,” said H. E. Corley Elementary School Principal Dr. Judy Franchini. “As a leadership magnet school, we want students to take the lead and take ownership of impacting the world around them. Our students have done that and more, and this award shows them that their efforts have not gone unnoticed.”

An environmental education and action initiative, Green Steps Schools was established in 2003 by Keep the Midlands Beautiful, Sonoco Recycling and DHEC’s Office of Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling. Officials say projects at Green Steps Schools must be “significant, well established, sustainable and documented on the school website.”

Green Steps officials noted the high number of projects led by H. E. Corley Elementary students and teacher Rosemary Bowie, including air and water quality protection projects, school gardening program and composting initiative. Jane Hiller, education specialist for Sonoco Recycling, said these projects helped the Leader in Me magnet school meet the criteria needed to be named a Certified Green Steps School.

“We set our standards high, so that the certification means something … and it takes a team effort to do this,” Hiller said. “H. E. Corley and other Green Steps Schools are doing their part in raising students who understand the importance of taking care of the planet in which they live.”
