Dent Middle School won the district’s fourth annual Quiz Whiz Academic Tournament held Jan. 10-11, 2014. During seven rounds and 21 matches of play, each of the seven middle school teams competed against each other for the championship title. The tournament is similar to the National Academic Quiz Tournament and is not a game of trivia. The rigorous pyramid-style questions focus on academics in subjects including, history, literature, science, fine arts, current events and sports.
The following match question is an example of one which students were asked.
Question: A car driving on a Cartesian grid starts at the origin, then travels to the points (5,0), (5,12), and (9,2), in that order. The total distance the car drove equals the sum of the distances between each pair of points. For 10 points – what is the total distance?
Answer: 21 [The distance between (0,0) and (5,0) is 5, between (5,0) and (5,12) is 12, and between (5,12) and (9,12) is 4; 5 + 12 + 4 = 21.]
The championship round featured Dent Middle, coached by Urusha Smith, against Summit Parkway Middle School, coached by Dr. Allison Benoit and Deborah Robinson.
Each participating player in the tournament received a medal. The 2014 winners will be recognized at a future School Board meeting. Previous tournament winners are Kelly Mill Middle School (2011), E.L. Wright Middle School (2012) and Summit Parkway Middle School (2013).
The tournament will be aired on R2TV, Time Warner Cable channel 12 in Northeast Columbia area, with episodes of new rounds each week. Viewers can also watch the matches on the district’s YouTube page.
