Orangeburg, SC – Construction will begin on the new Orangeburg Community Center and Gymnasium. The city held a groundbreaking ceremony recently on the $4.8 million dollar project.

Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler says when completed the facility should measure just over 23,000 square feet. It will have two full-size basketball courts, multi-purpose rooms, storage areas, restrooms and a concession area.

The new community and gymnasium will be located at the corner of Broughton and Whaley Streets.

Funding for the project comes from the countywide 1 percent capital projects sales tax, also known as the “penny tax” and hospitality tax allocations.

Leaders expect construction to last about 13 months.

Once completed there will be a fee for use to help maintain the upkeep of the facility.
