The Columbia Urban League hosted its 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Keeping the Legacy Alive” Breakfast, which was held at the Brookland Banquet.

Mr. Leroy Smith, Director of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, was the keynote speaker. Mr. Smith, originally from Florida, has an extensive background in law enforcement with over 20 years of experience. He discussed how to improve the relationship between law enforcement and communities of color.

Mr. James T. McLawhorn, Jr., President and CEO of the Columbia Urban League, stated, “in view of the recent national news incidences involving confrontation between law enforcement and communities, Mr. Smith’s participation was very timely in discussing ways to find common ground between these groups because we, as a community, are only strong and healthy when law enforcement and the community work together, which is consistent with Dr. King’s Beloved Community philosophy”
