SPARTANBURG – Clevedale Historic Inn and Gardens is celebrating its one-year anniversary by hosting “The Wonder of Women,a concert presentation focused on the empowerment of women. Featuring singers from Opera Noire of New York, “The Wonder of Women is an evening of arias, duets, and trios highlighting strong women featured in operas by Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, and other great composers. Popular Broadway tunes and Negro Spirituals will be presented, as well.In keeping with the evening’s theme, owners Pontheolla and Paul Abernathy will honor the work of local female community leader and advocate, Nannie Jefferies. Jefferies is the organizer of Angels Charge Ministry, an outreach program aimed at improving the lives of women after incarceration.“The Wonder of Women will take place at Clevedale Historic Inn and Gardens (1050 Willis Road Spartanburg, SC 29301) on September 13, 2014 at 7:00 PM.

Pontheolla, a native of South Carolina, had a desire to own and operate a bed and breakfast and events venue since her collegiate days at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. That dream, shared by her husband, Paul, who hails from St. Louis, Missouri, has come to fulfillment in the Clevedale Historic Inn and Gardens. Having come from a strong matriarchal family, Pontheolla chose the theme “The Wonder of Women for the business’one-year anniversary celebration as an homage not only to local community advocate Nannie Jeffries, but to the women who have personally helped shape her own life. Pontheolla remarks, “operating a bed and breakfast is no easy task but in the words of Marge Piercy, ‘A strong woman is a woman determined to do something others are determined not be done.’We hope to honor these women with our committed service to the Spartanburg community and with this event.”

Founded by three African-American opera singing enthusiasts, Opera Noire of New York members have entertained audiences from Milan’s La Scala to New York City’s Metropolitan Opera. One of the co-founders of Opera Noire of New York is Pontheolla’s brother, Robert Mack. When approached by his sister about the concept behind “The Wonder of Women,”he reiterated her sentiments, remarking “Opera Noire of New York believes in community service, and women are the backbone of the community. So, naturally, we count it our responsibility to uplift and honor them.”Scheduled performers for “The Wonder of Women are renowned artists Andrea Jones-Sojola, Brandie Sutton, Janinah Burnett, Karen Slack, Lucia Bradford-Wiggins, Jeniece Golbourne, General Director and Co-Founder Robert Mack, Artistic Director and Co-Founder Kenneth Overton, and Piano Virtuoso Jennifer Peterson.
