City to Host Community Development Week First-Ever Luncheon
The City’s Community Development department will host its first-ever Community Development Week Luncheon on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St.
The City of Columbia is committed to supporting the community and neighborhoods on a local level. The luncheon will focus on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) programs and the need for Congress to preserve and increase federal funding locally. CDBG and HOME programs assist the community through public and non-public service activities such as housing development, infrastructure, public facility improvements, after school childcare and healthcare programs.
Through the City of Columbia’s Community Development Week Luncheon, the Community Development department will highlight “Poor Credit History and Debt Preventing Economic Opportunities.” There will be a Speak Out session about this year’s topic with guest panelists:
· Mayor Pro Tem Tameika Isaac Devine, City of Columbia City Council
· Kathi Snipes, Security Federal Bank
· Bernie Mazyck, South Carolina Association of Community & Economic Development
· Sue Berkowitz, Appleseed Center for Legal Justice
The luncheon promises to be a unique opportunity to connect with neighborhood leaders, local banks, financial institutions, credit counselors and more. There will be a special guest appearance by Dr. Akil Ross, Sr., 2018 National Principal of the Year.
Richland County School District One juniors & seniors participated in a 500-word essay contest on “How Credit will affect my plan for the next 10 years of my life.”
All winners will be recognized at the Community Development Week luncheon.
· First place winner will receive $500
· Second place winner will receive $300
· Third place winner will receive $200
