CHAPIN – Chapin High School took first place for the “Most Outstanding Student Section” in the country by Varsity Brands. Varsity Brands is a national organization that sponsors cheerleading and school spirit participation and competitions. The annual competition includes more than a dozen categories of recognition for students, coaches, cheer squads, bands, teachers, and principals.
The CHS Student Government applied for the Student Section contest in March and received word from Varsity Brands in April that CHS was a finalist, along with four other schools from California, New Jersey, and Michigan. Hundreds of schools across the U.S. applied to the competition. On April 30, Varsity Brands broadcast the awards show live from the ESPN Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
The “Most Outstanding Student Section Award” honors a school whose student cheer section is unified, organized and creative, backing their athletic teams and demonstrating sportsmanship and style at the both home and away events.
In other categories, CHS student Graham Reinhart was a finalist for the “Magnificent Team Manager Award,” and Turner Bonham was a finalist for the “Student to Celebrate Award.”
“I am so proud of the student body for the passion and love they demonstrate in support of their school and of each other,” remarked Dr. Akil Ross, principal of CHS. “Under the direction of Coach Billie Williams, the CHS student leadership has found a winning formula for engaging all students in school related activities. As a result, the school spirit at Chapin High School is soaring!”
The CHS student body is excited to be awarded this exciting national accomplishment! The link to the 2016 Varsity Brands awards show is http://www.varsitybrands.com/awards.
