CHAPIN – Chapin High School’s marching band has earned its second consecutive 3A state championship.

The Pride of the Midlands band scored an overall 90.975 in its performance entitled “The Silk Road” to best 12 other bands at this year’s 3A state band competition on Oct. 31. It’s the third win in four years for Chapin High School’s marching band.

“We are so thrilled to have won the state championship two years in a row,” said Kevin Hebert, Chapin High School band director and Lexington-Richland School District Five 2015-16 Teacher of the Year. “This is tough because each year the competition gets stronger and stronger. This shows me that the tradition of excellence continues to grow each and every year.”

Chapin High School won this year’s 3A Lower State Championship on Oct. 24 to advance to the state competition. More than 50 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A marching bands from all over the state competed in the 2015 South Carolina Band Director’s Association State Championship Finals.

Hebert said his band’s continued success is due to several key factors. “I believe it is the hard work, teamwork, and good attitudes from the students and staff. The students have a sense of pride in this program because they know that when they put on that uniform; they are representing every current, former and future Chapin band member. They focus more on the performance than the competition. Their job is to give their absolute best performance each time. If they happen to win a competition, that’s just an added bonus.”

Chapin High School Principal Dr. Akil Ross added, “We are so proud of Mr. Hebert and the Pride of the Midlands marching band for their hard work and determination. The students set high expectations for their performance and rely heavily on the support of parents and community to reach their goals. As a result, all of Chapin, South Carolina celebrates this amazing achievement.”
