Dear Midlands Community,

On behalf of the Reverend Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr., Pastor of the Brookland Baptist Church, the Brookland Brotherhood Ministry, and the support of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ), I am honored to invite you to join us for Brookland’s Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Breakfast. The breakfast will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 9:00 A.M., in the Brookland Banquet and Conference Center, located at 1066 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia, SC, 29169. Tickets are $15 per person.

I am especially delighted to announce that our keynote speaker is Sumter, SC, native, attorney, author and civil rights activist, James L. Felder. Active in voter registration and education since the 1960s, he is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University and the Howard University School of Law. Among historical notables, he was one of three black lawmakers elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1970 and first to serve since the Reconstruction era.

His first book, “I Buried John F. Kennedy,” reveals the role he played in the 1963 funeral of President Kennedy. His recent book, “Civil Rights in South Carolina,” tells the stories of the sit-ins, integration of state universities, major legal rulings that ended “de jure” segregation in the South Carolina and drawn from in-depth interviews, newspaper reports and his own personal observations and experiences. Several other books include “Civil Rights in South Carolina: From Peaceful Protests to Groundbreaking Rulings” and “The Making of an A.M.E. Bishop.”

Locally, Felder has taught at Allen University, Benedict College and Voorhees College and has lectured on more than 35 colleges and universities. He resides in Columbia, S.C., and has two children and two grandsons.

It is our great hope that you will join us in recognition of the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday and hear the words of our distinguished guest speaker.
