Blythewood, SC- On March 22nd, the Blythewood Middle Honor Band participated in the South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment. The band prepared three pieces to be performed on stage to an audience and three judges. After their performance, they were taken to a separate location and given six minutes to prepare a piece that had never been seen by any of them. During those six minutes, they were not allowed to play or practice; they could only talk through the piece.

This is a process that is extremely demanding of both the students and the director. It takes months of preparation and practice to be able to achieve high ratings at this event. Not all schools are able to earn the highest rating, a Superior. Your performance must be practically flawless, including the performance of the piece you have never seen and prepared in six minutes.

According to Blythewood Band teacher Ms. Dunovant, “The Blythewood Middle Honor Band was flawless. They played their tails off and put forth effort, discipline, and dedication. From the moment they took their first step towards the school, until the moment they returned to the buses, not a single student lost their focus and concentration. They had a mission and their mission was a success.”

Congratulations to the Blythewood Middle Honor Band for an exceptional job! They worked very hard to earn their SUPERIOR rating. They will take the comments from the judges and continue to work hard to prepare for their next performance on April 9th at the Charleston Music Festival. Blythewood Middle celebrates and encourages these young musicians!
