Blue Ribbon Taxi Cab Company’s 90th Anniversary
Recently Mayor Steve Benjamin and the Columbia City Council recognized Blue Ribbon Taxi Cab Company during their regular 6 p.m. City Council meeting.
The original Blue Ribbon celebrates 90 years as an established taxi company. Blue Ribbon was originally located on the 1000 block of Washington Street in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. The Blue Ribbon Taxi Cab Company is now located on North Main Street in District I, where Councilman Sam Davis serves as their representative.
Councilman Sam Davis presented Barbara Dotson, president of Blue Ribbon Taxi Cab Company with a proclamation proclaiming Tuesday, August 14, 2018 as Blue Ribbon Taxi Company Day.
Aaron Jenkins, the grandfather of Columbia’s Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins was named the first president of Blue Ribbon followed by many other male presidents. In 2001, Barbara Dotson was named the very first female president of Blue Ribbon and is currently serving as the president.
A Blue Ribbon taxi cab was on display in front of City Hall to honor their long-standing history within the City of Columbia. Blue Ribbon operated throughout the Civil Rights Movement, beginning with driving protesters to the sit-ins at Woolworth and S.H. Kress department stores. Blue Ribbon has over 125 drivers and independent contractors who are contributing to the economic well-being of the community and region.
