Benedict College CECOR Students Attended the Department of Engineering 2018 Cyber Conference
Benedict College CECOR students, Cortne Dial and Khadijah Boykin, along with Carlton McAdams, S.T.E.M. faculty and Dr. Leon Geter, Director of the Benedict College Center for Cybersecurity participated in the Annual U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Cyber Conference in Austin, Texas, June 4 – 7, 2018. The conference theme was: Energizing Information and Cyber Innovation through Collaboration. Over 700 attendees represented industry, academia, and government.
A total of nineteen (19) CECOR students represented the following colleges and universities: Allen University, Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Norfolk State University, South Carolina State University, University of the Virgin Island, and Voorhees College. The highlight of the event, for CECOR, was the fact the Rick Perry the 14th United States Secretary of Energy and Dan Brouillette, Deputy Secretary of Energy both acknowledged CECOR in their respective speeches, and CECOR’s value toward preparing the next generation cyber workforce and talent.
In addition, the CECOR students received two small student-only group discussions about their CECOR experiences and career goals in a meeting with Dan Brouillette, Deputy Secretary of Energy and another session with Max Everett, Chief Information Officer, and Office of the Chief Information Office (OCIO). The students also participated in a Cyber Fire Network Security Hacking exercise in which the Benedict College led team won! Overall, the students were able to network with industry and government professionals about the cyber enterprise, career pathways, and potential internships.
