Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is proud to announce that recently at the 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast and Awards Ceremony held at the Word of God Church and Ministries located at 119 Diamond Lane, Columbia, SC, 29210, Senator John L. Scott, Jr. presented Richland County Sheriff’s Department First Sergeant Shawn McDaniels with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Award!
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that McDaniels is an incredibly experienced and dedicated law enforcement officer with an exceptional background and work history. Shawn graduated magna cum laude from Springfield College earning a bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a Master of Public Administration from Troy University . The Sheriff stated that Shawn has been working for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department for more than 15 years, 13 of which he served as a Criminal Investigator and Criminal Investigations Division Supervisor. Additionally, Shawn is also an adjunct professor at the Charleston , S.C. campus of Springfield College , School of Human Services , a published author, filmmaker and community advocate for at risk youth. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Shawn is now assigned to the School Resource Officers Division and he has been a hard working and dedicated deputy since day one; and is a great asset for the department and especially for the students he is diligently leading.
Pastor Eddie W. Davis, a founder of the Midlands Coalition of Churches, stated that the coalition was formed 25 years ago by Pastors throughout the community with the goal of helping to solve problems in our communities and to develop positive programs for youth. In addition, Willie H. Bryant, Executive Director of the Midlands Coalition of Churches, stated that this acclaimed award is given out every year to a former or current law enforcement officer who is active among the community and is passionate about ensuring the integrity of the community. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that he is very proud of Shawn and believes he is very deserving of the award; his hard work, dedication and compassion are without a doubt instantly recognizable to anyone who meets him. As the First Sergeant with the School Resource Officer Division, Shawn is a liaison between the
Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the schools; giving the department a positive and trusting relationship with students and our educators. Sheriff Leon Lott commends First Sergeant Shawn McDaniels for his service to the department and the community. The Sheriff added that First Sergeant McDaniels’ immense service and commitment to Richland County is a perfect example of the passion that the Richland County Sheriff’s Department applies to our community oriented policing strategy which builds unity in the community and improve the quality of life for ALL citizens.
