AARP-SC was one of several partners for the 32nd Annual Pick Ice Gala hosted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Gamma Nu Omega Chapter, on January 24, 2014 at the Cantey Building of the SC State Fairgrounds. The event–one of the largest black-tie fundraisers in the state–raises scholarships for high school seniors and deserving college freshmen in the Midlands and supports community service projects. Close to 2000 guests attended the Gala in spite of the frigid temperature. Some of the dignitaries and celebrities present were the First International Vice President of AKA Dorothy Buckhannan Wilson, Congressman James E. Clyburn, Senator Vincent Sheheen and the Artist Jonathan Green.
The theme, “Simply Pearlfection”, was carried out with crystal decor centerpieces on every table by JennAffair Fine Floral and Event Decor and complimentary Pepsi products by the Pepsi Beverages Company. Gourmet delights included shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles catered by The Friendly Catering while En Vision Band provided musical entertainment.
Donna Jones Gilbert is President of the Columbia Chapter and Sharon Earle chaired the Pink Ice Committee. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is an international service organization of over 260,000 college-educated women with the mission of service to mankind. In 2013, the Columbia Chapter awarded $37,000 in scholarships.
