Columbia Deltas Honor Benedict New President and Chief of Staff

The Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. rolled out the red carpet for a Crimson Legacy Affair, to officially welcome Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis President of Benedict College and Dr. Ceeon Smith the Chief of Staff to Columbia, South Carolina.
On June 30, 2017, Dr. Artis was unanimously appointed by the Board of Trustees as the 14th President of Benedict College. She is the first-female President in the 147-year history of the college which was founded by a woman, Mrs. Bathsheba Benedict, in 1870.
Dr. Artis comes to Benedict College from Florida Memorial University in Miami where she served for four years as the 13th President and the first female President in that University’s 138-year history. Dr. Artis is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where she earned a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Policy. She also holds a Juris doctorate from West Virginia University College of Law, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from sister HBCU, West Virginia State University.
Dr. Smith also comes to Benedict College from Florida Memorial University where she served as Vice President of Communications and External Affairs. She is the first African American to earn a Ph.D in Mass Communication from Arizona State University’s Cronkite School.
The meet and greet reception was held on November 12, 2017 at the Delta Life Development Center 5307 Fairfield Road Columbia, South Carolina. Dr. Artis and Dr. Smith are both members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. They received warm welcomes from Serria Cunningham, Regional Representative of the South Atlantic Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Brenda B. Branic, President of the Chapter. Mrs. Rosena Lucas presented Dr. Smith and Mrs. Helen Schumpert presented Dr. Artis. Both Honorees made brief remarks.
They were also greeted by Benedict College Alumni and friends, Richland County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Columbia S.C. Panhellenic Council, college and university representatives, community and county officials and Sheriff Leon Lott representing our Law Enforcement. Councilwoman Tameka Isaac Devine represented the Mayor’s office, presented a resolution and declared that it was Roslyn Clark Artis Day in the City of Columbia.

The Honorable Rosalyn Frierson Smith, Family Court Judge, closed the event with a beautiful toast to the Honorees. Dr. Artis and Dr. Smith thanked Ms. Pamela Foster, Planning Committee Chair and her committee for making the event an occasion to remember.
