LEXINGTON, S.C. — Maneuvering their pawns and knights expertly, a trio of Midway Elementary students recently won at a regional chess match.

Fourth-Grader George J. Wang, Fifth-Grader Anna H. Zou and Third-Grader Anthony H. Zou won first place in the K–5 division at the Midlands Scholastic Chess League III: Olympiad!, held December 9 in Columbia.

Sixty-nine players from across the state participated in MSCL’s largest tournament to date. MES competed against teams from Columbia, Clemson and Chapin.

Wang won third place for best individual performance on board one, while Anna Zou’s perfect score won first place for best individual performance on board three. The trio is eligible to play in the South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championships in March.
