Innovative Rural Offering for Home Internet Available in 18 States
EASTOVER, SC – AT&T* Fixed Wireless Internet1 for rural and underserved locations needing home internet is now available to residents and small businesses in parts of Richland County, including Eastover, Gadsden and Hopkins.
This follows the launch of Fixed Wireless Internet in parts of South Carolina in June as part of our FCC Connect America Fund commitment. We plan to provide access to over 1.1 million locations by 2020. In South Carolina alone, we have committed to providing access to 30,000 locations by 2020, reaching more than 40 percent of that goal by the end of this year.
“I am glad to see the innovative approach by private industry to help close the remaining connectivity gap between those living in rural and urban areas,” said state Sen. Darrell Jackson. “This new service is a positive step forward in bringing greater access to high-speed Internet to rural South Carolinians. Work remains to be done, and I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to help connect families and businesses to the internet.”
“While we often talk about education as the key to a positive and productive future for anyone, we sometimes overlook the fact that access to information and opportunities is essential to grabbing that key,” said state Rep. Jimmy Bales, “Broadband technology expands education beyond classroom walls and helps equalize differences between urban and rural areas. This is a good day for rural residents in southeastern Richland County.”
“As a small business owner, I see every day how economic growth and opportunities are tied to access to broadband,” said state Rep. Wendy Brawley. “That access is even more important for families and individuals, especially those in rural areas. I am excited about the difference this technology is going to make in lives and futures in our district.”
Our Fixed Wireless Internet service delivers a home internet connection with download speeds of at least 10Mbps and upload speeds of at least 1Mbps. The connection comes from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on customers’ homes or businesses. This is an efficient way to deliver high-quality, high-speed internet to customers living in underserved rural areas.
“With this innovative service, we are working to close the connectivity gap in South Carolina,” said Ted Creech, director of external affairs for AT&T South Carolina. “Access to fast and reliable internet is a game changer in today’s world. This service will bring additional opportunities for more customers in more parts of our state.”
In addition to South Carolina, the service is available to residents and businesses in parts of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.
